Happy Cactus Pin Cushion

It seems everywhere I turn I see a succulent.  If you're like me (crafty with a black thumb), it might be better to make yourself a happy little cactus. If you're a crafter, you can stick all your pins in needles in your cactus. Or you can one of these cheerful guys for someone you know who also loves plants but also has a black thumb.

Supplies:
Category 4/Worsted weight yarn
      Vanna’s Choice:  Fern Green, Terra Cotta, & Chocolate
US Crochet hook G-6 (4.00mm)
Black embroidery thread
Black safety eyes - 2
Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:
Ch = Chain
SC = Single Crochet
BLO = Back Loop Only
SC DEC = Single Crochet Decrease

Size: 3 inches wide by 5 inches tall

Any worsted weight / category 4 yarn can be used to make this pin cushion. The yarn and colors listed above are what were used in the picture. To make your cushion larger or smaller, just use a different hook! You can also change the height of the cactus by doing more or less single crochet rows (see notes within pattern).

SC DEC: Insert your hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop. Do this one more time. Yarn over and pull the yarn through all three loops on your hook.

Pot

Round 1: Chain 2, 5 SC in the second chain from the hook, join to first SC
Round 2: Ch. 1, 2 SC in each stitch around, join - 10
Round 3: Ch. 1, * SC in next, 2 SC in next *, repeat from * to * around, join - 15
Round 4: Ch. 1, * SC in next 2, 2 SC in next *, repeat from * to * around, join - 20
Round 5: Ch. 1, * SC in next 3, 2 SC in next *, repeat from * to * around, join - 25
Round 6: Ch. 1, * SC in next 4, 2 SC in next *, repeat from * to * around, join - 30
Round 7: Ch. 1, in BLO, SC around, join - 30
Round 8: Ch. 1, going through both thicknesses, SC around, join - 30
Rounds 9-12: Ch. 1, SC around, fasten off - 30

I found my pot sits better when the right side of your work is on the outside of the pot. This is optional so play around with it a bit to see what works best for you.

Dirt

Round 1: Chain 2, 5 SC in the second chain from the hook, join in first SC - 5
Round 2: Ch. 1, 2 SC in each stitch around, join - 10
Round 3: Ch. 1, * SC in next, 2 SC in next *, repeat from * to * around, join - 15
Round 4: Ch. 1, * SC in next 2, 2 SC in next *, repeat from * to * around, join - 20
Round 5: Ch. 1, * SC in next 3, 2 SC in next *, repeat from * to * around, join - 25
Round 6: Ch. 1, * SC in next 4, 2 SC in next *, repeat from * to * around, fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing to the pot - 30

Cactus

Round 1: Chain 2, 5 SC in the second chain from the hook, join in first SC - 5
Round 2: Ch. 1, 2 SC in each stitch around, join - 10
Round 3: Ch. 1,2 SC in each stitch around, join - 20
Round 4: Ch. 1, *SC in the next 3 stitches, 2 SC in the next*, repeat from * to * around, join - 25
Rounds 5-14: Ch. 1, Sc around - 25

This is where you can increase or decrease the number of rounds to change the height of your cactus
Attach the eyes between rounds 6 and 7
Embroider a smile below the eyes

Round 15: Ch. 1, *SC in the next 3 stitches, SC DEC in the next stitch*, repeat from * to * around, join - 20

Stuff the cactus

Round 16: Ch. 1, SC DEC around, fasten off - 10

The order in which you sew all the pieces together does not matter. What seemed easiest for me was to sew my cactus to the circle of dirt and then sew it to the top of the pot. When sewing the dirt to the pot, I put my needle through both thicknesses of the dirt and through the back (inside) loop of the pot. By doing this, I ended up with a little bit of a lip at the top of the pot where it meets the dirt. I stuffed the pot as I sewed.

My cactus stands pretty well on it’s own, but if yours is a bit tipsy, you can line the inside bottom of the pot with something to weigh it down and make it sit flat. Something as simple as a piece of cardboard can even work!

Enjoy!!
