Friendly Octopus

Lately I've been seeing a lot of crochet octopuses (octopi?). I already make mini ones that are available for purchase in my Etsy shop, but I figured I was long overdue to make a big octopus. I made this one using worsted weight yarn, but I think it would make a great cuddle buddy with bulky or blanket yarn. These don't take long to make and are a great project for when you want to play around with color!

Supplies
G-hook (4.25mm)
H-hook (5.00mm)
Worsted yarn - main, 2 accent, black
2 9mm eyes

Stitches
SC - single crochet
HDC - half double crochet
DC - double crochet
SC2TOG - single crochet 2 stitches together (decrease)

Shells - 5 DC in same stitch

There are great online tutorials for a magic ring, but you can also begin with a chain 2 and work the required number of stitches in the second chain from the hook.

Base:

With G-hook and main color
Rnd 1: 8 SC in magic ring, join to first stitch
Rnd 2: Ch. 1, 2 SC in each stitch around, join to first stitch (16)
Rnd 3: Ch. 1, SC in same stitch as join, 2 SC in next, * SC in next, 2 SC in next *, repeat from * to * around, join to first stitch (24)
Rnd 4: Ch. 1, SC in same stitch as join and next, 2 SC in next, * SC in next 2, 2 SC in next *, repeat from * to * around, join to first stitch (32)
Rnd 5: Ch. 1, SC in same stitch as join and next 2, 2 SC in next, * SC in next 3, 2 SC in next *, repeat from * to * around, join to first stitch, TURN (40)
Rnd 6: Working in the BACK LOOPS, Ch. 1, SC in same stitch as join, skip next stitch, shell in next, skip next, * SC in same as join, skip next stitch, shell in next, skip next *, repeat from * to * around, join to first stitch and fasten off (10 shells)

The reason for turning your work to do round 6 is so the right side of the shells will be facing out after the base is attached to the body.

Tentacles:

G-hook
With main color: Chain 50, starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 2 HDC in each stitch to the end - make 2

With accent color #1: Chain 40, starting in the first chain from the hook, work 2 SC in each stitch to the end

With accent color #2: Chain 40, starting in the first chain from the hook, work 2 SC in each stitch to the end

H-hook
With main color: Chain 50, starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 2 HDC in each stitch to the end - make 2

With accent color #1: Chain 40, starting in the first chain from the hook, work 2 SC in each stitch to the end

With accent color #2: Chain 40, starting in the first chain from the hook, work 2 SC in each stitch to the end

Using the yarn tails, attach the tentacles to the base. They should hang from the right side of your work.

Body:

With G-hook and main color
Rnd 1: 8 SC in magic ring
Rnd 5: Ch. 1, SC in same stitch as join and next 2, 2 SC in next, * SC in next 3, 2 SC in next *, repeat from * to * around, join to first stitch (40)
Rnd 6: Ch. 1, SC in same stitch as join and next 3, 2 SC in next, * SC in next 4, 2 SC in next *, repeat from * to * around, join to first stitch (48)
Rnd 7: Ch. 1, SC in same stitch as join and next 4, 2 SC in next, * SC in next 5, 2 SC in next *, repeat from * to * around, join to first stitch (56)
Rnds 8-14: Ch. 1, SC around, join to first stitch
Rnd 15: Ch. 1, SC in same stitch as join and next 4, SC2TOG, * SC in next 5, SC2TOG *, repeat from * to * around, join to first stitch (48)
Rnds 16-17: Ch. 1, SC around, join to first stitch
Rnd 18: Ch. 1, SC in same stitch as join and next 9, SC2TOG, * SC in next 10, SC2TOG *, repeat from * to * around, join to first stitch (44)
Rnds 19-20: Ch. 1, SC around, join to first stitch
Rnd 21: Ch. 1, SC in same stitch as join and next 8, SC2TOG, * SC in next 9, SC2TOG *, repeat from * to * around, join to first stitch, do not fasten off (40)

Place the eyes between rounds 15 and 16, approximately 7 stitches apart. Stitch a mouth between the eyes along round 18.

Place the base and body together. Slip stitch through both loops of the last round of the body and the unworked (front) loops of the base. Stuff as you go. Fasten off and weave in your ends.

I take great pride in my work. I ask that you do not redistribute or sell this pattern or modify it in any way and claim as you own. Please feel free to make as many as you want for your own personal use or to sell at craft fairs, on your own personal website or on marketplace websites, such as Etsy. I would appreciate a link to my site in your listing, http://www.CuppaStitches.com
